SESSION TYPE: Featured Speaker
SESSION TITLE: Rethinking Student Participation: A Model from Hip-Hop and Urban Science Education
STRAND: STEM
DAY: Friday
TIME: 8:30 - 9:30 am
LOCATION: Sutton Parlor North, 2nd floor
Full participation in the classroom is a significant, yet under-focused upon component of teaching and learning. This presentation describes how educators often inhibit students from enacting practices that support participation while they concurrently support practices that indicate peripheral or superficial involvement in the classroom.

Though an exploration of hip-hop culture and recent research in urban science education, I discuss ways that participants in hip-hop provide insight into improving classroom interest and participation.
