The Chase Multimedia in the Classroom award competition was created to showcase the creative use of technology by students and teachers in a collaborative effort. These dynamic projects both support, as well as often go beyond the classroom curriculum. In these past five years there have been many innovative projects, well-deserving of the accolades that are bestowed upon them at the Celebration. We thank the teachers and students for their efforts and know that you’ll find these projects as inspiring as we have.

Living Proof: The Holocaust Happened
(Video - Social Studies Project)
Living Proof actively and creatively uses the oral history and video shoot methodologies realized by middle school students to provide a unique lens/viewpoint for the Holocaust experience. The convening of students from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Brooklyn, Israel, and parochial/public schools to conduct these interviews is distinctive.

When Actions Spoke Louder Than Words: The Progressive Era
(Video – Social Studies Project)
Films highlight the problems, reformers and activists brought to society’s attention during the progressive era: Tammany Hall politics, temperance, industrial workers, inadequate child care, poor housing, child labor, tainted food preparation, and women’s suffrage. Films created during this era were silent and produced in black and white so we chose to employ those same elements.

The Phi Experiment

Students conducted an experiment to see if the level of involvement in the memorization process has any association with the number of digits a student can memorize. They used the irrational number Phi, also known as the Golden Ration. The Web site shows all aspects of the design and analysis of the experiment.

The Glory & Demise of Our Environment
(Multimedia – Arts/Global Awareness Project)
As man has helped technology evolve, the environment has been forced to follow suit. In honor of the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference’s objectives to save the Earth, students chose from an array of still photography image making technologies dating back to the 1850’s to create images that would enlighten people about the beauty and demise of nature.

Technology Etiquette for Today’s Teens
(Video – Social Studies Project)
Students discussed how technology has changed over time and the ways that some people use it in an inappropriate manner. Students created short movies to address particular behaviors, emphasizing the importance of correcting those behaviors. This video is a compilation of their work to educate everyone on technology etiquette.

The Super Battery Fairy
(Video – Science/Global Awareness)
This class became concerned that they didn’t know as much as they should about how to protect their environment, especially about safe ways to dispose of rechargeable batteries. They researched the topic and created a public service announcement (PSA) as an informational tool.

A Mural of Mythic Proportions
(Multimedia – ELA/Arts Project)
Their 2500 square foot painted mural is covered with over 500 original poems and essays by students. Its purpose is to reflect the cultural and interdisciplinary connections needed to be a well-educated individual. Students learned practical skills such as the use of power tools, measuring techniques and teamwork. Extensive on-line research was a daily necessity.

The Great American Patent Caper
(Web – Social Studies Project)
An interactive Web site about patents, property and piracy that revolves around a mystery that needs to be solved by the reader. It contains quizzes, interactive activities and games, and video of a trip to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in Washington, D.C. Also included are interviews with a teenager charged with piracy, an inventor and the Director of the USPTO, the Honorable Jon W. Dudas.

There’s an Animal in Trouble: A Look at Communities
(Multimedia – Social Studies/Arts/ELA project)
Second-grade enrichment students wrote their own original script. Their plot centered on an animal in that community who was in trouble. They creatively solved the animal’s dilemma. After recording their play using Garage Band, their characters, props and scenery were created. Their movie was then filmed by capturing digital still photographs. Voices, music and still images were combined using iMovie.
